RHETT RANSOM PENNELL
was born in Berkeley, California and grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. He now lives deep in the woods of Sparta, New Jersey (an hour away from NYC) with his lovely wife Margaret. They are both usually covered in cat hair thanks to the three furry little beasts that also live in their home.

When he was small, Rhett learned to write and draw from reading children's books.

When he was bigger, his first well-paying job involved selling children's books over the phone.

When he ran off to New York to become an actor, he spent the next four years acting in plays based on children's books.

Eventually, Rhett got the hint and started making children's books of his own. Excuse Me, Are You A Dragon? was his first--he both wrote and drew that one. He has since illustrated the books To Know the Sea and the award-winning The Day Lenny the Leopard Lost His Spots! His next book, Hey! There's A Goblin Under My Throne!, will be available in December 2002 (he both wrote and drew that one, too).

As an artist and designer, he works on all kinds of projects. Samples of his work can be seen here.

He thanks you for visiting his website and wishes you all the best.

(Oh...during his acting days he did lots of strange things--everything from being a prisoner on "Oz" to being a hand double for Ethan Hawke. But the worst was appearing in a really bad infomercial. He apologizes to anyone who saw it.)
